Babe the Blue Ox statue is driven down Nicollet Mall as part of “On To Nicollet” festivities in Minneapolis held on August 4, 1937, and featured in the August 7, 1937 edition of the Bemidji Pioneer. Original caption: “Darlene Gary, drum major for the Bemidji, Minn., “On-to-Nicollet” deegation [sic], battles ‘Babe,’ Paul Bunyan’s big blue ox in the loop as the fans from out-of-town paraded on their way to Nicollet park this noon. ‘Babe’ stopped marching near the West hotel, Bemidji headquarters, and refused to budge until Little Miss Gary prodded him and told him he would be late for the Miller game.” From the folder “Bemidji” in box 145 of the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Edina newspaper photographs collection, Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul.

Baby's or toddler's spoon

Baby's or toddler's spoon

This sterling silver baby spoon has a handle that curves back on itself completely, forming a loop. The word 'baby' is written on it in raised lettering. The bowl has the words "Hey diddle diddle" and a scene depicting the actions described in the Mother Goose rhyme: "Hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle / The cow jumped over the moon / The little dog laughed to see such sport / And the dish ran away with the spoon." The spoon was found in 1971 during excavation of the southeast wall line at Historic Fort Snelling. The excavation trench ran from the South Battery (also known as the Hexagonal Tower) to the officers' latrines. This area was used as a dump and contained a wide variety of artifacts
