Originally a hotel and boarding house for single women, the building was converted into office space by the University of St. Thomas in 1990, when Up and Out of Poverty! organizers occupied it and helped convert it into the Exodus Hotel, which providing affordable housing for those in need. Although the building was later downtown, Exodus Residences continued to operate at a different location in downtown Minneapolis under the management of Catholic Charities.
