James Curry

Minnesota-based filmmaker and educator James Curry was educated at Full Sail, the American Film Institute, and the Minnesota School of Business. He earned his MFA in film from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. His great-grandfather, also named James Curry, was active in the Black community in Hastings in the 1880s and helped organize Brown’s Chapel AME. That Black community in turn formed a new one in segregated South Minneapolis.

James has worked on numerous projects in Los Angeles and Minneapolis as well as in broadcasting, currently for KSTP. A sampling of his fiction and non-fiction work includes a short documentary created for and about Prince, a narrative short entitled westbound, and the documentary masterjam. In 2021 he was awarded the Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship for Film. He continues to teach film and production at Augsburg University.
